Norway has two official languages, Norwegian and Sami. Norwegian is by far the most common of the two and there are two different written dialects of Norwegian. Bokmål is the most common dialect, the other is called Nynorsk.

Importing Personal Effects

The below documents would be required to ship personal effects from the UK to Norway:

  • Norwegian ID number
  • Completed Norwegian customs declaration form (RD-0030E)
  • Copy of the photo page of importer’s passport

If personal effects have been owned and used outside of Norway for 12 months or more and above documents are provided, all or most personal effects should be able to be imported into Norway duty and tax free.

Importing Vehicles

In addition to requirements to move personal effects to Norway, the below documentation will also be required to import a vehicle:

  • A purchase invoice/purchase contract that shows the sum paid for the vehicle
  • Invoice for cost of freight to transport the vehicle to the Norwegian border and documentation of any other accrued costs whilst vehicle is being transported to the border in Norway. (Insurance cost, for example)
  • Registration document
  • A certificate of Conformity (COC) may also be required

All documents required to move personal effects and vehicles to Norway will be passed onto a customs agent to check and then advise if acceptable to clear customs in Norway and if any further documentation will be required.

Moving Pets

Documents such as the below would likely be required to import a pet from the UK to Norway:

  • Import License
  • Approved ID Marking
  • Health certificate, along with vaccination certificates

The above list is not exhaustive and will depend on the animal. It is recommended to contact a pet moving specialist for advice if all of the above and if any other documents are required.

Prohibitions and Restrictions:

It is not recommended to include alcohol or food in a shipment of personal & household effects. Alcohol is highly dutiable and most food will not be permitted and any food allowed will be subject to import tax

Importing plants do you need a Phytosanitary certificate.

A certificate will be required to import plants into Norway, however, it is not recommended to import plants into Norway from the UK, due to the complications and additional time required for customs clearance. There are no guarantees that will get customs cleared to enter Norway.

General information about the country and what it is known for

In the city of Tromsø in Northern Norway, the sun does not set between May 19th and July 26th. Between November 28th and January 14th, the sun does not rise in Tromsø.
A knighted penguin, Major General Sir Nils Olav is the colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King’s guard. Residing in Edinburgh zoo, he is the third penguin to be bestowed with the name and honours of Nils Olav. The original Nils Olav was initially given the rank visekorporal (lance corporal) in 1972. Each time the King’s guard return to Edinburgh zoo, Nils Olav will receive a promotion. His last promotion was in August 2023 when elevated from Brigadier to Major General.

Norway has the record for the most amount of gold medals won during the Winter Olympics, with a total of 148. It also has the record for most total Winter Olympic medals won with 405.

There is a village called Hell in Norway.

Whether you need a permit to work or live there

Apart for a few exceptions, for the vast majority of instances a UK passport holder/resident will need a visa to live and work in Norway.
