Importing Personal Effects
There are a large number of documents and requirements to import personal effects into Mexico. The below is not an exhaustive list, but an example of some of the requirements for Mexican citizens and permanent residents would need to provide:
- Clear copy of shipper’s passport
- Clear copy of both sides of shipper’s Permanent Resident Card
- Copy of the Unique Code for Personal Registration (CURP)
- Original Inventory- each page must be stamped by the Mexican consulate
- Electrical inventory with the brand, model and serial number of all of the electrical items in the shipment
Depending on the shipper’s status and where they are moving and other factors, will depend on what further documents are required. Effects will not be shipped until agent in Mexico has given green light that all the correct documentation has been supplied and approved. There is a time limit from when resident cards and inventories are stamped and when shipment must arrive in Mexico.
Importing Vehicles
Mexican citizens and permanent residents cannot import cars into Mexico. If shipping effects on a temporary visa, you may be able to import a vehicle on a temporary basis, more details on this can be provided if needed.
Moving Pets
A few documents are required to bring dogs, cats and other animals into Mexico and owner/importer would have to pay duties. It is recommended to have these forms supplied to the relevant authorities in advance and have the pet arrive at the beginning of the week. This is to avoid pets being kept in customs control for more time than necessary or over the weekend as pets will not be fed whilst in customs control.
