General information about the country and what it is known for

The oldest university in the world is in Italy. Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna currently has around 50,000 students enrolled. The university is at least 8 years older, maybe more, than Oxford university, which is the second oldest university in the world.

The history of human life in the area of Italy can be traced at least 850,000 years. However, it was the year 1861 when the ‘Kingdom of Italy’ was founded. Since Roman times, what is now Italy was made up by a collection of sovereign states, kingdoms and duchies. A political and social movement led to these different states and kingdoms being unified to become ‘Italy’. The unification of Italy is also known as the ‘Risorgimento’.

Mainland Europe’s only active volcanoes are in Italy. Mount Vesuvius, Mount Etna and Stromboli are the three of Italy’s volcanoes that have erupted within the past 100 years. Mount Vesuvius is perhaps most well-known for its eruption in AD 79 which devastated two Roman cities (Pompeii and Herculaneum). Mount Etna is the tallest volcano in Europe, its recorded height in 2021 was 3,357 metres, although this will vary slightly depending on it summit eruptions.
