Prohibitions and Restrictions:
There are a number of restrictions on shipping to Australia. For example, whilst softwood, such as wicker, bamboo and cane are not strictly prohibited, they will be subject to a customs inspection for wood mite amongst other things. The customs department in Australia will charge for this and they have the right to either fumigate the items destroy any items they do not clear for entry into Australia. Any hardwood with evidence of wood mite will also be inspected, fumigated or possibly destroyed. The customs department in Australia do not like things like dirt, rust or dust to come into Australia from other countries. If any item is inspected and found to have any traces of these, they will clean them and again in a worse- case scenario destroy the items, unfortunately, again there is a charge for this.
It is not advised/prohibited to ship foods, teabags/spices and other consumables. Alcohol will be subject to being charged very high levels of GST to import to Australia.
More information on items prohibited to be shipped to Australia can be provided upon request.
Importing plants do you need a Phytosanitary certificate. You cannot import plants from the UK to Australia
General information about the country and what it is known for
Although perhaps better known for sunshine and beaches, you can find very good skiing conditions in Australia, between June and September in the Australian Alps. There is said to be more snow on the Australian Alps than the Swiss Alps.
The formal symbol of Australia is The Commonwealth Coat of Arms. A main feature of the coat of arms is a shield flanked by a kangaroo & and emu. The two animals were chosen as they are native to Australia and embody the idea of a nation moving forward as neither animal can move backwards easily, if at all. The shield on the coat of arms contains symbols of the 6 states of Australia.
Koalas, platypus & Echidnas are other animal species which can be found in Australia, but nowhere else in the world.
Whether you need a permit to work or live there
Most non-Australian residents will require a permit/visa to live and work in Australia.
